  1. How do you find this site?
    • Unappealing
    • Unprofessional
    • Impractical
  2. Who do you think this site is created for?
    • Regular customers and new customers who are interesting in finding out more  information on This fashion such as outlet lcoation or hotline numbers.
  3. What are the good attributes of the site?
    • Good navigation
    • Clarity
    • User friendly
    • Information hierachy
  4. What are the bad attributes of the site?
    • Basically i find that it is unprofessional for the fact that This fashon is a reknown chain store that is found throughout Singapore. It does not meet the market standards for a website and is unappealing and unimpressive towards returning customers and new ones.  The information is listed on the site but the way the page elements are placed makes it difficult to extract information that maybe crucial to the customers.
    • On the front page, it states “have you redeemed your BONUS POINTS?” but it doesnt not provide us information about these “Bonus points” nor navigate us to any page that may provide them.
    • On some sub-pages such as  “This Card” and “Gift voucher”, there is no navigation for “Contact” us which is pretty irregular and might be misleading to users who are unfamiliar with using the internet.
    • Some of the pages have their sub headings in a light gray font which is difficult to read abd maybe illegible for older users due to the yellow background.
    • Language used has multiple errors which may bring a negative image to the store.
    • The site is too wordy, customers may not enjoy reading large paragraphs of  texts just to find the information they are looking for. They do have graphics but minimal.

1. What is Browser-Safe Color Palette / Web-Safe Colors?

Well apparently, the palette of web-safe colours has a trillion other names, such as; Browser-Safe Color Palette, Netscape palette, 216 palette, Web palette, and/or 6×6x6 color cube. And from the research I;ve done, the people who created these browser-safe palette colours have absolutely no sense of design. Mostly, the palette contains a really limited range of lighter and darker colors, and is full of highly saturatedm eye-blinding colors and less muted, tinted or toned colors.

Nowadays the only reason to use a Browser safe-colour palette is probably if your web design homework is gonna be viewed from a 256 color (8-bit) computer, which is the minority nowadays. 10 years ago, it was the majority, so life was pretty sad for the eyes of those users…

Well there are a few other reasons actually, if you’re gonna make a handphone or PDA application..you’re probably gonna need those sassy shades again.

The Browser-Safe Palette, is the actual palette that Mosaic, Netscape, and Internet Explorer use within their browsers. It contains 216 colors out of a supposed 256. That is because the remaining 40 colors are different depending on whether you’re a Mac or PC supporter. By eliminating the 40 variable colors, this palette is optimized for cross-platform use. It’s basically useful if you do alot of flat-color illustrations, logos with flat-color, and areas in any image that abuse alot of the same colour.

2. Is it still relevant in today’s context? Why?

Computing technology has way surpassed that era, therefore only a minority use the Browser-Safe colour palette. However, some companies still appreciate old shcool honours, so why not?

3. What are the common fonts face found on PC & Mac?

4. What is page loading time and how it influence your design?

My own common sense tells me that page loading time is the amount of precious time wasted while the page downloads all the neccessary visuals and scripts to appease your eyeballs appetites.  And everyone knows, the longer the page load time, the more you want to pee in your pants, therefore if it takes too long, you’ll click the attractive little “x” at the top right corner of your browser. Handy-dandy.

Well i guess the best way to reduce the annoying bit is to reduce the file size or host it locally.

5. Web D. Proccess Comparison

Read about Web Design Process article above and
write what you think about it (at least 150 words):

I guess the Web design proccess is about the same as any piece of client based work like illustration or graphic design, because from the start to the end, you’ll have to work with your client to know what he/she wants. Time and again they may reject your work, but nevertheless every step takes you to a higher level.  During conceptualizing, a massive amount of sketching, doodling and scribbling will be done allover your sketchbooks and papers in the form of thumbnails and notes. It’s always good to start with a wide range of ideas, ask your client what he has in mind, do a fatload of research(to get inspiration if you’re out of ideas) and then try to visualize it and put it in black and white. I find that it’s important to frequently have checks with your client and not complete your work to quickly so as to know that you’re going on the right track. If you finish a piece of work too soon, your client might reject and and, boohoo, you’ll have to go back to basics.

The design proccess comes before the scripting, thats for sure. You have to know what you want by the time you’re typing out your codes. Of course, your design has to be approved by your client before you start working on it. Thumbnails to superimposing to finalizing the design. You also have to think about the readability, your compositioning of where you’re gonna be placing your images or links and how to make it look professional. Also, it can be interactive so as to not bore the user. The content has to be interesting as well and not just full of words to blind all your readers. (Thats where typography come’s in!) It’s not just the layout that is important, so is the text and images and how you’re gonna put them all together to appeal to viewers. And your links have to work of course, what’s the point of a website if all the functions arent working.

And of course, the biggest chore, testing your site on different browsers.

I find that organizing your work is a crucial contributing factor to web design. Without having the discipline to organize your work, you’ll be wasting alot of time searching for flaws and mistakes you might have made in the proccess of coding. Therefore it’s always important to follow a managable proccess in order for everything to surface cleanly.

Enjoy.
